The haven of Ilis in the Ionian Sea was Kyllini, an important ancient port.

In the prefecture of Ileia important city is Andravida, the capital of the princedom of Achaia during the Frankish period.

The medieval fortresses of Chlemoutsi (built in 1220), Glarentsa in Kyllini and Pontikokastron in Katakolo (dated from the Byzantine period but reconstructed in the 13^th Century) are imposing in the area. In the capital of the prefecture of Ileia, Pyrgos, there are Neo-Classical buildings designed by Ernst Ziller.
