HISTORICAL, CULTURAL AND LANDSCAPE DATA ABOUT THE CONTEXT

Aigion was inhabited from the prehistorical period and onwards. The ciotizens of Aigion are mentioned by Homer to have participated in the war of Troy under the leadership of Agamemnon. In the beginning of the historical years Aigion was shaded by Helike, Ripes and Aiges. But those three cities declined early and Aigion became the main town of Aigialeia. According to the tradition it belonged to the Ionian Dodekapolis (twelve cities: in Greek). In the historical years the town of Aigion created from the union of seven or eight settlements. After the destruction of Helike from the earthquake in 373 B.C. Aigion considered to be the religious centre of Achaeans and after the 276 B.C. became the base of the new Achaean League.

In 14 B.C. Octavian Augustus founded a roman colony in Patras and consequently Aigion degraded. From the description of Pausanias it is obvious that in the 2nd century A.D. retained its prestige as the political and religious metropolis of the enslaved Achaia. Aigion was an important city during the Frankish and Turkish rule when it was named Vostitsa.
