The alluvium of the river Alpheios covered the area of Olympia. The first excavations started in 1875.

 In the prefecture of  Ileia important city is Andravida, the capital of the princedom of Achaia during the Frankish period. Worth seeing are the castle of Chlemoutsi in Kyllini (built in 1220) and the castle of Pontikokastro in Katakolo (dated from the Byzantine period but reconstructed in the 13th Century)

In the capital of the prefecture of Ileia, Pyrgos, there are Neo-Classical buildings designed by Ernst Ziller.
