HISTORICAL, CULTURAL AND LANDSCAPE DATA ABOUT THE CONTEXT

The area of Forlė shows important traces of the Roman presence, mainly in the vicinity of some locations, which were considered as privileged residences for the well-off people and the notables of Forum Popilii. One of the most important villae,  which was active until the III cent. A.D., is still visible at Fiumana, in the Rabbi river valley, close to the road leading to Predappio. The composite and large complex included a zone for the manufacturing and storage of agricultural products and a residential quarter with thermal baths. Evidences about the social status, the wealth and the prestige of the owner are represented by the bronze base of a statue and a limestone slab, part of the support, with the scene of a sacrifice.

From the same site come two sepulchral inscriptions immortalizing the memory of two influential persons, both political officers in the municipality of Forlė:  Caius Baebius, quattorvir, regular soldier, prefect of the coast in Spain at the time of the battle of Anzio and Caius Purtisius Atina, decorated with the highest magistrate office.
