Description

The building of the new cathedral was commenced shortly after 1000. It was carried out by the architect Lanfranco and the sculptor Wiligelmo and was to be an important moment in the history of Modena, marking the beginning of a great search for ancient marble to be used in the building works. Among the Roman artefacts of greatest importance are the capitals forming the font, architectural fragments in the campionese transept and the famous lions. Originally belonging to a funeral monument they were re-used, perhaps after reworking, as column supports in the main porch of the Dome
