HISTORICAL, CULTURAL AND LANDSCAPE DATA ABOUT THE CONTEXT

Situated at the Southern limit of the Po plain, Rimini is the chief-town of a province formed by the terminal part of a group of valleys, the main of which are those of the Marecchia and Conca rivers. In the last decades, following an increase of importance as a seaside resort, the coast has become the centre of the economy and progress of the area, whereas the inland, rich in history and traditions, has only recently started to emphasize its resources, thanks to a new program of promotion dedicated to the large number of visitors of the Romagna Riviera. Part of this program is the creation of naturalistic itineraries and structures. One of the most important is the Riserva Naturale Orientata di Onferno, dedicated to the preservation and fruition of the amazing caves holding the same name; the substantial works aimed at the restoration and fruition of several ancient villages, castles, churches, palaces and mills, as for example the complete reassessment of the ancient village of Albereto, in the surrounding of Montescudo; last but not least the creation of museums with the function of displaying and preserving the memory of country local traditions before the great changes of the ‘50s and ‘60s, as the Museum of Usages and Customs of the Romagna people (MET), located inSantarcangelo di Romagna. Such opportunities can be encountered even in the inner valleys, in the ancient charming villages of Verucchio, S. Leo and Sassocorvaro and in the wild but perfectly practicable landscapes of the Parco Naturale Regionale del Sasso Simone and Simoncello as well as in the area of the Eremo di Monte Carpegna.
